God Creates Part IV (Genesis 2:1-3)

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

On "the seventh day" God "rested." The word rested in this context does not suggest inattention or inactivity but rather refection, enjoyment, and the upholding of creation.

Colossians 1:17, "He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."

God made "the seventh day" to be a "holy" day, unique and set apart for a special purpose. He wanted us to have a day of rest when we can worship Him, enjoy His creation, and be refreshed.

God later directed the Israelites in the Fourth Commandment to keep the seventh day holy as a "Sabbath Day" (see Ex. 20:8-11). God's people were to cease from their normal work and to focus on God and His purposes in creation. There would always be the temptation for human beings to forget that who they are and everything they own are blessings from God. The Sabbath Day was a regular reminder that the Lord alone is God.

Apply the Scripture: How do you get refreshed and reconnect with God when you observe times of rest?
